The boys in Realt na Mara BNS, Donacarney, celebrated Green Week or Seachtain Glas this week. They are working hard to achieve another Green Flag for their school. They have been working on finding more environmentally friendly ways of travelling to and from school. This has led directly to a huge increase in the numbers of children walking to and from school under the Walk on Wednesdays(WOW) and Walk on Fridays (WAF) initiatives.
The Irish School is working for its Fourth Green Flag
The theme of this year`s green flag action plan is travel. The Irish school are looking at different ways of reducing their dependency on cars in travelling to and from school. The boys in the picture are taking part in a walkability audit. The purpose of this is to check if there is a safe pathway on the way to the school in Donacarney. Unfortunately, the results of their audit showed that the footpath to the school was too narrow for pedestrian traffic. In February, a group from the school will travel to a workshop in Navan to find out about other ways for reducing traffic around their school.
The Italian School Recycles its Waste
In these photos you can see the pupils in the Italian school are listening to a lesson on waste separation. Afterwards, they began to put into practice what
they had learned. They have begun to practise waste separation not only at school
but even at home. Every Tuesday morning they carry their waste to school
because they are partcipating in a competition to be more eco-friendly. An
operator of the company Daedalus Environment, which is responsible for the
collection and disposal of separated waste, comes to school to weigh and pick up
the waste collected from children. At the end he issues a receipt that shows
pupils' progress.
They are really happy to do it!

Christmas Arrangements.
The Science and Nature Club, Realt na Mara BNS, Donacarney, Ireland
The Irish school made Christmas arrangements from old materials and greenery. They re used old pots and oasis blocks. They gathered greenery from around their locality and learned the names of each of the plants. Then they planted up the pots and decorated them with frills made from semi shredded, recycled paper. They added old decorations and pictures cut from old Christmas cards to brighten up them up.

Christmas Card Recycling in Ireland
We made Christmas baubles out of old Christmas cards. All you need is a puncher, split fasteners, string and of course, old Christmas cards.
Cut your Christmas card into strips.Punch holes at one end of the
strips. Put the fastener through the holes. Then bend the strips into a circle.

Last year the Italian school got involved in a healthy eating project
"Progetto Ministeriale - Frutta nelle scuole -" The children were encouraged to eat more fruit. And then they saved the seeds from the fruit and planted them around in the school. You can see some of the results in this picture.
They are looking forward to planting more fruit trees and shrubs this year.
